The Timisoara National Theatre has the pleasure to announce a new edition of FEST-FDR (the European Festival of Performing Arts Timisoara – New Romanian Drama Festival), once again having the financial support of the Romanian Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. FEST-FDR2012 will take place between May 5th and May 13th 2012.
FEST-FDR carries on in a fresh, contemporary manner the bold tradition of a festival formula initiated 30 years ago, aiming to place the Romanian theatrical phenomenon inside the European one as an integral part, in the spirit of unity in diversity.
FEST-FDR is thus structured as to include two parallel components: a Romanian and an international one, represented equally in the programming. The former showcases the best of Romanian theatre, an integrated part of European culture yet to be explored. FEST-FDR is actually the only platform dedicated to contemporary Romanian drama and theatre, placed in a global context through the presence of a jury to award the best performance. Surprising points of view, local twist given to universal themes and Romanian artists of international acclaim are a few of the arguments that make the line-up of FEST-FDR a must-see. Consistent to the idea that theatre and society are indissolubly connected, the festival brings to the stages of the National Theatre productions that focus on the most stringent topics of the 21st Century (last year’s winner of the New Romanian Drama Section, „Roşia Montana”, for instance, tells the story of a mountain paradise on the verge of ecological disaster disguised as progress, a hot potato that still holds the front page of today’s newspapers).
This year’s edition will fully explore theatre modalities in relation to stringent themes such as multiculturalism, ethnical diversity, inter generational solidarity in the 21st Century not only through performances, but also transnational workshops, debates, book editing etc.
Last but not least, FEST-FDR2012 will be a celebration of theatre in all its complexity. In a multicultural community such as that of the city of Timişoara, all aspects of the performing arts find the perfect playground. Focus will fall on colourful, free outdoor performances coming from countries with a rich tradition in street theatre. It is our strong belief that theatre has the power to bring cohesion into the community, and FEST-FDR2012 will be yet another proof.
See you there!
