The Controversy of Valladolid is the theatre adaptation by Jean-Claude Carriere of his homonymous novel. If, historically speaking, the debate in 1550 between the missionary Bartolome de las Casas and philosopher Juan Gines de Sepulveda regarding the rights and statute of the natives in the New World is the first recorded dialogue regarding human rights, it is just as true that recent history demonstrates the discourse is as valid today as it was back then. As the French authors resumes it: are the natives of the Americas human or not? Differences – in ethnicity, skin colour, religion, gender etc. – as justification for abuse, torture and exploitation is a recurrent theme affecting not only individuals, but also civilisation and the very notion of humanity.
